"THE VOCALS OF A 90's GIRL BAND!"
A few weeks back, I was invited to do some pre-Spine Race documentary coverage of something that, quite frankly, has never been openly seen before. This was the coming together of a group of women who, collectively and individually, have some huge accolades, from raw, outspoken influencers to epic race wins and FKTs. This was a group of women who are the peers of British female ultra-running, a couple of them casually recovering from giant European alp races (by casually doing 100+ miles of the Pennine Way for the weekend), some of them training for a vast 200-mile journey on the winter downs, and the majority of them training to take on the unknown weather, and conditions of the Pennine Way!
Despite facing the reality that they will be competing against each other in a matter of weeks, they came together with one shared interest in common, the shared passion for ultra-running, and in particular the representation of female ultra-runners, in what is largely a male-dominated niche sport.
They came together not to 'sus out each other's tactics' or 'size each other up' but to simply make memories and share the love, to share their wins and losses, sharing what they took from them, to share tips not hide them, all the while coming closer together with the comradery, style, and, honestly, with the vocals of a 90's girl band! Yes, that's right, the vocals, trust me when I say it, those vocals could be heard across the open moorland and through the valleys of the Pennine Way. But they were blissful vocals of joy, passion, and happiness, the sort of vocals that should be celebrated and pushed forward to the front of the start-line pack, and the vocals that are needed from such incredible advocates in order to push female ultra-running to the forefront!
This was a weekend that all women across the sport, whether you are the fastest front runner or the fearless back runner should be doing together, as it's the coming together that makes for growth and progression. So ladies, GET YOUR GIRL BANDS ESTABLISHED!
